A New Chapter for Dr. Thea Sweo Alvarado

Dr. Thea Sweo Alvarado has embarked on a new journey, taking on the role of interim assistant superintendent/vice president of instruction at College of the Canyons.

She has also been a member of the American Sociological Association and the Association for the Advancement of Higher Education.

Early Life and Education

Sweo Alvarado’s journey to becoming a faculty member at COC began with her early life experiences and educational background. Born and raised in a low-income household, Alvarado’s family struggled to make ends meet. Despite these challenges, her parents encouraged her to pursue higher education, and she eventually earned a B.A. in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley. Alvarado’s academic achievements were recognized with a prestigious scholarship, which enabled her to pursue her undergraduate studies. Her undergraduate experience at UC Berkeley exposed her to various sociological theories and research methods, shaping her academic interests and career aspirations.*

Alvarado’s career development at COC began in 2011, when she joined the college as a part-time faculty member.
