The Allure of Studying in the Netherlands

The Netherlands offers an attractive alternative to studying abroad in the United States or the UK. With its rich history, vibrant culture, and excellent education system, it is no wonder that many students are drawn to this beautiful country. One of the main advantages of studying in the Netherlands is the government’s efforts to make higher education accessible to all. As a junior at Scarborough High School, I am excited to explore my options and discover which university is the best fit for me. The Netherlands has a unique system of “university colleges” that offer liberal arts programs similar to those found in the US. These colleges are designed to provide students with a well-rounded education that includes both academic and social aspects. As an international student, I am particularly interested in these programs as they offer a high percentage of English-taught courses.

Programs Tuition Fee (€) Accommodation Living Expenses
Maastricht University €15,000-€20,000 €8,000-€12,000 €3,000-€5,000
Leiden University College €9,000-€15,000 €6,000-€10,000 €2,000-€4,000
Amsterdam University College €10,000-€18,000 €7,000-€11,000 €2,500-€4,500
Utrecht University College €12,000-€20,000 €9,000-€13,000 €3,000-€5,000

As an international student, I was excited to explore the various universities in the Netherlands. During my visit, I had the opportunity to tour some of the top universities, including Maastricht University, Leiden University College, Amsterdam University College, and Utrecht University College. During my tour, I discovered that the Dutch government makes a real effort to ensure that students can access affordable higher education. This includes providing a range of scholarships and financial aid options to support students. “Start planning early. Universities outside the U.S. can have a different timeline, and the process is different from the U.S. (not any more difficult),” said Scott Harris, a student adviser at Scarborough High School. “Look into programs that match your academic goals, and make sure you understand the costs, credits, and visa requirements. Be open-minded and ready to step out of your comfort zone.”

Ren Ciara Oenema is a student at Scarborough High School. This article was submitted as part of the school’s Extended Learning Opportunity program. According to Harris, attending college abroad can provide students with a unique opportunity to experience new cultures, build international friendships, and discover new perspectives. “Studying abroad can provide students a unique opportunity as it lets you experience new cultures, where you are part of the community, and not a sightseer,” he said. “You gain a global perspective, grow more independent, and often learn just as much outside the classroom as you do in it.”
